Personal Identity, not just a matter of Personality

It is so interesting to reflect upon one's self. What does it mean to be you? We cannot think of ourselves as a part of a collective if we do not see ourselves as a unit, if we do not wonder what our identity is. But, at the same time we cannot think of what we really are, if we do not position ourselves inside the society, fields of interests and influence that we interact with on a daily basis. To be "You" is not a notion made out of pure reason, you cannot simply decide who you are. You can think and imagine yourself as to who you want to be in the future, everyday trying to grasp an ever-moving future, a new tomorrow.

We can decide upon many things, how we want to be referred to, how to be acknowledged within each circle of social relations we form and that are formed before us. We do not have pure freedom over our choices, sadly, because of race, gender, sex, money,ideologies,etc....

It is very interesting and important to always wonder who you are, "Who am I?".

For me, however, "Who am I?" is not enough to wonder. "Who I want to be, who I try to be, who i am willing to be in the future, despite all odds? ..." seems more suitable in the never-ending journey for self-actualization, as we set our goals and aspirations.

As the video suggests, what are we really? Our Hands, Feet, Breast of Fingers? If yes, when do we stop being Us, when do I stop thinking that I am me, the same person. Isn't it our mind who defines who we are? Isn't memory, our past interpreted in our mind what consist our identity of who we are? Aren't our thoughts and experiences, our empirical and rational engagement with the world and other people that make "Who we are. »?

And when do we stop being "Us" for the Others, the others that know us, that surround us, that we shared our memories and life events?

The most important question is of course... In this never-ending personal journey of active and passive transformation in an attempt to achieve, in one way or another, what we consider each time a self-actualization, our highest potential, burdened by a series of social predispositions and assumptions... "When and how are we really ourselves?"

Just before the end of this train of thought I simply want to saw how remarkable is that all of us create what we call society, culture, history and all that is manmade. Each of us, a little pebble in the sand, can be a small part of the sum, living their lives wondering who they are, inside the world who loves to define them.
